Background/Biography

Bram Buunk is professor of Evolutionary Social Psychology at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, leading research projects into the evolutionary backgrounds of human behaviours such as altruism, jealousy, partner selection and rivalry. He previously conducted basic studies into topics such as dealing with cancer, AIDS prevention and marital satisfaction. Buunk found an importance source of inspiration in the theory of social comparison, according to which people systematically compare themselves to others. He is concentrating on further refining this theory via an evolutionary approach. Buunk’s work was recognized in 2005 when he was appointed Academy Professor by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). In 2010 his book entitled ‘Oerdriften op de werkvloer’ (Primal Urges in the Workplace) was published, in which he uses an evolutionary approach to explain seemingly irrational behaviour in the workplace, such as sexual harassment, bullying, gossiping and competition.
